CALDER TROPHY WINNERS AND THE SOPHOMORE JINXHow will Calder Trophy winner Kirill Kaprisov perform in 2021-22? As Minnesota's NHL Rookie-of-the-Year enters his second season, could he be subject to the "Sophomore Jinx"? Three of the last five rookie-of-the-year winners increased their PPG(points-per-game) in their second seasons. Of the two players whose PPG went down, 2017-18 Calder Winner Mathew Barzal had the most substantial decrease, dropping from 1.04 PPG to .76 PPG. Artemi Panarim also had a PPG decrease, dipping from 0.96 in his rookie year to 0.90 in his sophomore season. The other Calder winners of the last five years increase their PPG in their second years. This group includes Cale Makar (2020), Elias Petterson (2019) and Auston Matthews (2017).
